As you know, the Parish of the Resurrection does a good deal of meaningful ministry and outreach in our region, and is having a positive impact on the lives of many people. It is a ministry that needs your support, even in the slower summer months. Therefore the Vestry is launching a new “Sunshine Giving Campaign.”

The “Sunshine Giving Campaign” was chosen as an appropriate slogan for a number of reasons including its likeness to our Parish programs. In its literal meaning, sunshine is something that is vital for life and growth. On another level it is an energy that can provide light, comfort and warmth and is quite welcome by people often living in despair. Sunshine in Newfoundland also comes with summer, which is a down time in our Parish for attendance and free will giving. As a result, the summer season is also a time when the Parish struggles.

Our sincere request is that you are able to pledge $50.00 (two coffees a week for June, July and August) towards this initiative above your regular free will giving. Winston Churchill once said, “You make a living from what you get; you make a life from what you give.” Please join with us in creating a ray of sunshine in the lives of others in our Parish, our community and by your very offering yourself. Your name will be included in our “Sunshine Garden” directory. Enclosed is an envelope with return address. You may also contact any member of the vestry at the above address should you have further questions or require any assistance. Arrangements can also be made to pick up your donation. You can make a difference! You can be the difference!

Thanks so much for all your support!

    I'm inviting you

Back to Church Sunday: September 29

    Who are you inviting?

Back to Church Sunday and focused Alpha invitation is all about the people who are not here. We aim to reach the people who are not here through the people who are here. And success is one person inviting one person.

The secret of the Sower…he kept on sowing!! He learnt to discipline his disappointments.

Not every one we ask will come, but we need to ask anyway – sowing the seed.

12 Steps to Becoming an Inviting Church:

    1. Vision – If every one of us invited a friend and they accepted we would double our congregation. Let’s do it!

    2. I as the church leader am going to invite someone, will you?

    3. Make sure every member of the church has had a personal invitation to invite someone.

    4. Teach about how God connects people through friendship.

    5. The power of your story – to re-remember who invited you.

    6. Get every member to ask themselves the question – who has God been preparing in my life?

    7. Practice the question – “would you like to come to church with me?”

    8. Pray for courage to invite, and pray for those being invited.

    9. Make the invitation.

    10. Go and pick up your invited guest from their home.

    11. Introduce them to friends over food and coffee.

    1. Assume they are coming the following time you meet as a church and invite them again.

    thanksgiving

    Dear Parish Members:

I am very pleased to bring some added great news to your Thanksgiving holiday. We have been approached by a person who has heard some good things about our Church, its achievements and goals. This person is willing to make a match donation of $1000.00, possibly more, to go towards our parish functions and aspirations. This means that if we can raise $1000.00 for our parish in any way, outside of our present fundraising programs, by the end of October this individual will donate the equivalent. One parish member has already pledged $100.00 to the venture. Therefore if my math is correct we only need to raise $900.00 to obtain $2000.00 in much needed funding. The donation at this time of year is dearly needed. If you can help in any way please contact me, Gary or Alfred before the end of the month.

    Sincerely,

    Lynn Clarke

The program encourages women and their families to eat healthy food. Colour it up will help you choose more vegetables and fruit. During the six sessions, you will discover many ways to make it easier to eat vegetables and fruit. The program will help you to follow Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide which recommends 7-8 servings of vegetables and fruit for women in your age group.

Colour It Up consists of six 2-hour sessions once a week.

    Sunshine

    Sunshine for Giving Campaign

“Kindness is the sunshine in which virtue grows” Robert Ingersoll

As you know, the Parish of the Resurrection does a good deal of meaningful ministry and outreach in our region, and is having a positive impact on the lives of many people. It is a ministry that needs your support, even in the slower summer months. Therefore the Vestry is launching our annual “Sunshine Campaign” this month.
The “Sunshine Campaign” was chosen as an appropriate slogan for a number of reasons including its likeness to our Parish programs.
Our sincere request is that you are able to pledge $50.00 (equal to two coffees a week for June, July and August) towards this initiative above your regular free will giving. Winston Churchill once said “You make a living from what you get; you make a life from what you give.” Please join with us in creating a ray of sunshine in the lives of others in our Parish, our community and by your very offering yourself. Your name will be included in our “Sunshine Garden” display located next to the nursery entrance unless you indicate your preference not to have your name posted. We respect your decision and will insure confidentiality. Please indicate your choice when returning your donation in the enclosed envelope with return address. You may also contact any member of the vestry should you have further questions or require any assistance. Arrangements can also be made to pick up your donation. You can make a difference! You can be the difference!
Thanks so much for all your support!

    Children's Church

The Parish of the Resurrection offers two programs for children on Sundays at 11am. One is a nursery program for pre school children up to 4 years of age. These children stay in our St.Nicholas play room for the full hour of the liturgy. The children enjoy songs, stories and crafts all while learning the love that is God.

The other program is for children 5 to 11 years of age.

Godly Play is a Christian education programme designed for children ages 4-12 and is being used extensively throughout North America and the UK.  It is based on the Montessori method of teaching which believes that children learn with all of their senses - not just sight and hearing.  Godly Play tells biblical and liturgical stories with the aid of materials that the children can handle and it encourages them to explore the stories for themselves.

    All are welcome!

invited"Invited," a series of short films and written resources, that seek to explore what it means to engage in genuine, Christian invitation. We begin with the conviction that "invitation" is at the very heart of the gospel--- that Jesus invites each one of us to come and follow Him, and being an invitational people is at the very core of our identity as Christians. Come and join us at the parish of the Resurrection in South River for this 6 week program, beginning 7pm on Thursday, April 16. All are welcome.

    1. Why invite?
    2. Whose invitation is it anyway?
    3. So who is invited?
    4. What gets in the way of us inviting?
    5. What does inviting look like today?
    6. What are the risks and rewards of inviting?

What are we inviting people to?
-- to learn and join in the way of Jesus Christ
--a generous, loving people committed to the good news of Jesus Christ that transforms lives.

The 2015 event will be held at Pitchers Pond Whiteway for the first time in Parish History. Proceeds of the tournament will go towards maintaining parish ministries and community work that have a direct and lasting positive impact in our region now and in the future. In past years the tournament has always been a great success and this year’s event is promising to be epic! Community sponsors can get involved in two ways or both! Enter a 4 person team and lay down the challenge for this year’s bragging rights and some really great prizes; play on the fringe by making a donation to sponsor a hole or both. Participants entering the tournament will have two chances to win $5000.00 along with prizes being awarded for: the best overall team score, the worst team score, longest drive ladies and gentlemen, longest put ladies and gentlemen, most accurate shot and of course the best dressed team. Door prizes will also be awarded followed by a fish chowder, soup, biscuits and sandwich buffet reception. Sponsors will receive community recognition in our registration package booklet, recognition on tournament course map with individually sponsored holes, web site, Facebook accolades and individual mention and thanks at our closing reception. Please consider supporting the parish in this worthwhile event. It’s about keeping “U” in our community and making our communities just that much better. Make a difference, be the difference and have some fun in participating.

A Note from the Rector’s Warden

The Parish of the Resurrection is at a crossroads.  Our financial situation has been extensively reviewed by the Diocese and it has been clearly noted that our income has been slowly decreasing over a period of several years.  As a result, we have been unable to meet all of our financial commitments.

The Diocese sees the Parish of the Resurrection as an important model of ministry for the future.  They want to invest in helping us turn our financial situation around.  The congregation, at a meeting on June 29, has accepted a proposal from the Diocese to accept a loan of $13, 000.00 to start us anew right now!  Going forward, we must meet all of our financial commitments on a monthly basis and if we can clearly demonstrate an increase in our givings by this December, the Diocese will consider forgiving approximately $30, 000.00 owed in synod assessments.  What a gift to be given – a fresh start!

Do you value worshipping together as a community in our church house?  Do you value the Christian education programs offered at our parish?  Do you value the partnerships that our parish has established with those in need in our communities?  Do you value the Parish of the Resurrection as your spiritual home?

There are many ways that you can help the parish meet our new goals – increase your weekly free will offering, subscribe to the pre-authorized debit program to give more consistently, contribute to the Sunshine Campaign, support our parish fundraisers, and invite others to join us in worshipping at the Parish of the Resurrection………….

Since our last congregational meeting in the spring, we have already started to improve our financial situation with increased free will offerings and strong support of our fundraising efforts. Please speak to Father Gerald, the wardens or any member of the vestry to let us know how you can help.  We are confident that everyone is committed to the Parish of the Resurrection and that we can expect a prosperous future together in faith and love.

    Lynn Clarke

Jesus calls us to lay down our lives and to serve others. There are many ways to follow Jesus in lives of loving service to others. This Sunday we will be honouring the service and dedication of the members of the Bay de Grave Fire Department (the same invitation will be extended to the Brigus Fire Department early in the new year).

Fire trucks to tour will be available after the liturgy for young and old alike.

It is also Pot Luck Sunday. Bring along a dish of food to share, and your time to share in the friendship of the community of Church.

    refugeeGood day,
Attached is a letter from Archdeacon Amanda which is an invitation and opportunity or people from the archdeaconry of Trinity Conception to respond, with our diocese, to the current refugee crisis.
For those interested, we will be having a congregational meeting after the liturgy on Sunday, November 1. Pass the word around to anyone who may not be on our e-mail distribution.

The Diocese of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador

    Archdeaconry of Trinity-Conception

    October 15, 2015

    Dear Friends:

I write to you today on behalf of the Clergy of the Archdeaconry of Trinity-Conception.

By now you have all had opportunity to read Bishop Peddle’s Pastoral Letter on the Syrian Refugee Crisis. In it he gives us information on a Diocesan plan to assist in this global crisis by “…[helping] facilitate, enable, and support parishes and diocesan groups to sponsor refugee families.” He also calls on each and every parish to “…engage in a process of discernment with respect to what role each parish would be willing and able to play in refugee sponsorship and support.”

As you can imagine, adjusting to a new country and culture is extremely difficult. Many specialized programs and supports are necessary to help families transition from Syria. It is important that refugees be near such services. Because of this, it would not be practical for us in the Archdeaconry of Trinity Conception to sponsor a refugee family. However, there is still much we can do to contribute to our Diocesan Plan by assisting parishes who do sponsor refugees. Discerning ways in which we can do this is not only a request from our Bishop; it is also a Christ given mandate to us as Christians.

At a meeting of clergy from the Archdeaconry, it was suggested that we provide opportunities to the parishes of the Region to get involved by:

    1. Contributing financially to sponsorship through a special envelope that would go to an Archdeaconry Fund for Diocesan sponsorship; and
    2. Compiling a list of volunteers who would like to give their time and talent to helping families settle in Newfoundland. This would involve travel to St. John’s.

While securing funding to sponsor refugee families is important, the necessity of volunteers to spend time with the families and help them transition to life in Canada is even more important. As this process unfolds, and Syrian families arrive on Newfoundland soil, there are more needs that will be identified and other concrete ways in which parishes can help.

My friends, in St. Matthew’s Gospel Jesus says, “I was a stranger, and you welcomed me…” Let us prayerfully discern how we, as Parishes and individuals, can tangibly contribute to our Diocesan response to this global crisis by giving financially or by offering our time and talents. It is in so doing that we will know the truth of Jesus’ words, “…when you did it to the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”

    In Christ’s Service,

    The Venerable Amanda Taylor+

    Territorial Archdeacon, Trinity-Conception

PWRDF to Respond to Fort McMurray Wildfires
(Primates World Relief and Development Fund)

PWRDF will respond through local Anglican channels as the needs become evident in the next few days. Naba Gurung, PWRDF’s Development and Humanitarian Relief Coordinator, has been in contact with the Dioceses of Athabasca and Edmonton and will continue to liaise with both dioceses throughout this emergency.

    The Rev. Summer

    Notices: Summer 2016

Our Annual Sunshine Campaign has a special envelope in your box of Offering Envelopes. The wardens and vestry are asking that you give an extra donation this summer, over and above what you would normally give. This is to help us meet our ongoing financial commitments over the slower summer months. Envelops are available at the entrance of the Emmaus Café, or contact one of the wardens or vestry.

    Summer Ministry Schedule

With the summer season upon us, and our parishioners holidaying and less regular at Sunday liturgy, it is even more difficult for us to make our monthly commitments. In addition to the Sunshine Campaign, please consider post dates cheques, or even better, sign up for automatic deposit.

Another way of giving has been set up on our parish web page through Pay Pal. Check it out at www.anglicanresurrection.com

Enjoy the summer, but don’t forget your church!

Our pantry is getting low on moose meat that we use for our very successful monthly buffet breakfast. If you have any moose meat that you can donate to the parish, contact Bob Bishop or Gary Myrden.

Helping Hand is getting low on food items. Please remember to bring items on Sundays (or bring directly to the food bank) to donate to the Helping Hand.

Automatic deposit and Envelopes: Your responsible financial contribution to the parish is of course very important. Envelops are available on table at entrance to the Oratory. For more information on automatic deposit, please talk to any of the financial team: Deanna Spicer, Lynn Clarke, Winston Bishop, or Father Gerald.

The Lord Jesus calls us to be a welcoming and Spirit-filled community. As we gather from Sunday to Sunday, and throughout the week, please make the opportunity to greet and love those whom you don’t YET know.

    The HOUSE for the CHURCH
A number of years ago as our parish was continuing the process of re-creating our dying 4 point parish into one vibrant new community, and we began the process of selling our buildings, we were accused of selling the “church.” You cannot sell the church, because the church is the people of God. Therefore we were intentional on not calling any part of the new building a “church.” We wanted a “Home”where the church would gather for a common life, prayer and service to others.

“The “Church,” the ecclesia, is the people of God. When St.Paul in his New Testament letters refers to the Church, he is not referring to any building (for there was no “church building”, people gathered in houses for eucharist and fellowship), he is referring to Christian people in a particular local.

With this theological teaching in mind, the Parish of the Resurrection - in a time of liturgical and spiritual renewal - continues to build the Church (as is our call in every generation), edifying and calling into deepening maturity the people of God who father in this parish. In this process of building up the Church, we do need to “house” the church. This is what the “New House for the Church” building project was all about. Putting a roof over the Church in our parish. A House that enables us to continue to proclaim and live the unchanging truth of Christ, yet enable us to do so in an ever changing society.

To honour and respect the exciting and transformative journey that this church family has been on, let us refrain from referring to the building as the “church.” We the people are the church, and the church gathers in its house to pray, to love and to serve.

    Pilgrim

A new Christian education program that will be offered this fall: Pilgrim

Pilgrim is a major new teaching and discipleship resource from the Church of England. It aims to help every local church create a place where people can explore the Christian faith together and see how it can be lived out each day.

Pilgrim takes a different approach to other Christian programmes. It approaches the great issues of faith not through persuasion, but participation in a pattern of contemplation and discussion with a group of fellow travellers.

Pilgrim is comprised of two stages: the Follow stage for those very new to faith, and the Grow stage for those who want to go further. Each stage contains four short six-session courses which focus on a major theme of Christian life.

Pilgrim assumes very little understanding or knowledge of the Christian faith.

    It focuses on Jesus Christ

Pilgrim aims to equip people to follow Jesus Christ as disciples in the whole of their lives.

    It flows from the Scriptures

The primary focus of each session is a group of people engaging with the Bible together.

It draws deeply from the Christian tradition

In the Early Church, the Christian faith was taught by the transmission of key texts which summed up the heart of the Christian message. Pilgrim restores this approach for the twenty-first century.

It honours the Anglican way and its many streams

Pilgrim has been developed as a specifically Anglican resource which aims to cater for every tradition in the Church of England.
