Penitental Rite

Priest: We gather in God’s name;

All: we claim Christ’s promised presence.

Priest: My sisters and brothers, not out of dread and fear, but believing in the understanding and forgiveness of God, let us rid ourselves of what we need to carry no longer.

(Silence)

Priest: Eternal Maker of the endless heavens, lowly Christ, befriender of the changing earth, Holy Spirit, wind over the flowing waters, in earth, sea and sky you are ever present.

All: O hidden mystery, sun behind all suns, soul within all souls, in everything we touch, in everyone we meet, you are there, and we give you thanks.

Priest: But where we have not touched but trampled you in creation, where we have not honoured but avoided you in one another, where we have not received but rejected your goodness, forgive us, and hear our plea for your pardon.

Priest: Holy God,

All: Holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

Priest: Let us live as those who treasure God’s costly generosity, by safeguarding God’s earth, delighting in its people, and loving our Maker to whom be glory for ever.

All: Thanks be to God. Amen.

Homily

(silent meditation after homily)

An Affirmation of Christian Faith

We believe in God

In whom is power and compassion.

We believe in the Creator

Who gave birth to the universe,

Set solar systems dancing in space,

Shaped molecules and mountains,

And conceived beauty beyond our imagining. God’s power topples tyrants, and brings down walls of separation; God’s love embodies the tenderness of a mother and father,

Encouraging and caring for each of us.

We believe in Jesus,

Born in obscurity in an occupied land;

A human being, vulnerable to hunger and thirst, persecution and grief.

He understood the power of love and confronted the powers of evil, spoke the truth with courage and clarity, forgive his enemies and changed lives. In his living, dying and rising again he showed love strong enough to save the world.

We believe in the Holy Spirit who sustains, comforts and empowers us, opens the scriptures, opens our minds, and illuminates earth’s darkness.

Amen.

Divine Gift (Modified)

Sacrifice became for us the gift of life

We hold it dear, you are always here.

When trials appear

Help us Lord to trust, not fear.

Let stillness draw us in

To the One within.

You are here with us.

You are here in us.

You are here as us.
